Knowledge
is the strength in planning for the future.
The Neuropsychological
evaluation consists of a structured interview and several
hours of formal testing to examine general intellectual ability,
sensation and perception, attention and concentration, learning
and memory, communication, problem solving flexibility, and
fine motor speed.

Physical therapy focuses
on movement of joints and muscles. Individualized exercise
programs are developed to improve functional skills such as
walking, movement and coordination, and learning to use equipment.

Medical Management is
available for those who do not have a neurologist or may be
in need of a physical medicine physician. Diagnostic second
opinions and spasticity management are available. Our physicians
will work closely with other existing physicians.

Occupational therapy
is directed toward compensation skill development. Accommodations
are helpful in cognitive changes, fatigue, energy conservation,
and work or daily life adjustments. Employment evaluations
are available.

Speech-language therapy
focuses on making changes that will increase the ability to
communicate efficiently. Therapy for oral motor exercises,
swallowing, or augmentive speech equipment can be beneficial.

Psychological counseling
provides emotional support and education for both the client
and family. Counseling allows the person with multiple sclerosis
to deal with emotional difficulties or changes in functional
skills typical of this condition.
The goal of psychological counseling is to help individuals
better understand the nature of multiple sclerosis and the
effects it produces on brain-related functions. Counseling
support can help resolve emotional/motivational issues and
address the impact of the client's disability on the family.

Biofeedback allows
a person to exert conscious control over specific biological
responses such as muscle tension. This can be beneficial for
pain management and stress management. |

| What is the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic? |
The Center for Neurorehabilitation Services (CNS) created
the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic to address unique needs of multiple
sclerosis clients. Many have benefited from this program since
the 1980s. In 2002 we received Affiliate Clinic status from
the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The outpatient rehabilitation services focus on psychological,
physical, and cognitive difficulties which often accompany
the sensory and motor function problems of multiple sclerosis.
The significance of fatigue is also a focus.
Techniques taught help alleviate present difficulties and
provide a foundation for the use of compensatory strategies
in the event that challenges should increase. Adaptive Driving
Services are also available.
Clients may be referred by physicians, health care providers,
family, friends, or self-referral.
Typically, insurance can be billed and the Center is Medicare
and Medicaid approved. There is a sliding fee scale available
when needed.
Our interdisciplinary team has provided neurorehabilitation
since the 1980s. In addition to a board certified neuropsychologist,
clinical neurologist, and physiatrist the team consists of
therapists who hold degrees in psychology, counseling, speech
and language pathology, occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation,
social work, music therapy and physical therapy.
